Risk Management

In March 2007 the Thunder Soccer Club Board of Directors voted to adopt the policy of requiring all Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and Board Members to be required to under go a comprehensive background screening.  Therefore, Thunder Soccer Club has established our own account with the National Center for Safety Initiatives.  These steps are fully in line with a similar policy adopted by the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) in September 2006.

Thunder Soccer Club is proud to announce a working partnership with National Center for Safety Initiatives through which we will engage in a comprehensive background screening program.

Thunder Soccer Club has taken important steps to ensure the highest level of safety within our programs - for the youth participants and also for you, who make the programs a success. One of these steps is the implementation of a standardized approach to background screening for our coaches through the National Center for Safety Initiatives. This includes a comprehensive background screening using the Center’s Check it Twice™ product and a simple “Red Light/Green Light” clearance report issued in accordance with the Recommended Guidelines® published by the National Council of Youth Sports. This is part of a national movement towards the standardization of safety programs for youth-serving organizations in this country.

Thunder Soccer Club has worked with National Center for Safety Initiatives to ensure that this process is convenient, secure and confidential.

December 1, 2009 UPDATE:
Recently MSYSA has expanded it’s original voluntary policy, now making it mandatory for all Coaches, Administrators, and registered volunteers to undergo the same comprehensive background screening.  This requirement takes effect on January 1, 2010.  Quite simply, what this means is that beginning January 1, 2010 any carded adult on the team roster will need to have a current background screening.  See MSYSA Info

In the past the Club has absorbed the cost of these screenings and intends to do so going forward with some exceptions in the name of cost containment.  As such, the Board has instituted the following policy:

1)  The Club will absorb the cost for screening one Head Coach, one Assistant Coach, and one Manager for each team (three adults).

2)  Teams are welcome to have more than three officials on their roster but will be billed back at the rate of $20 per carded adult over and above three.
